The Matrixx high bay light engine needed advanced PCB design and a controller that could drive a cascade of engines down one bus — and the client had neither capability in house. Tekt took on both, along with the systems engineering.

The central controller runs directly off mains and drives six light engines over a high-power dual-bus constant-current architecture. Each engine carries an array of twenty-four Cree five-watt high-power LEDs, surface mounted across two sub-buses.

The hard part was thermal. Heat had to leave a densely loaded surface-mount board and reach the heatsink housing at low thermal resistance, while the board stayed electrically isolated and the assembly stayed manufacturable. Earlier boards in this class used standard substrates; Tekt moved the engine to an aluminium PCB and bonded it to the heatsink with thermal epoxy. The epoxy transfers heat comparably to a thermal paste and forms the mechanical bond at the same time, which takes separate fastening out of the assembly. Tekt also standardised the interface connector, so every engine attaches to the bus the same way — the earlier systems had no connector suited to the bus method.

Tekt built the electronics in house; the mechanical system was not Tekt's to build. The light engines shipped as the solution for a range of warehouses in Australia.
